Heat Expansion of Metal

Equipment: Metal expansion tools - one has a ball and one has a ring at the end, and they are made out of metal. The handles are made out of wood - so that you won't get burnt from the metal.  We also used an element with fire - a gas top element.

Proposition: We wanted to see if the metal would expand, and I thought that it would not expand. We first put the the ball through the ring. The ball went through the ring.

Experiment: We tried to see if the metal would expand. First we lit the element and then we hung the ring and the ball over it. and then the metal expanded. The metal expanded and couldn't fit through the ring. It got red hot. The scariest thing was that Abbey got out a fire extinguisher. The ball came off the chain because it was so hot, and the ball and the ring stuck together. We the put them in water. They cooled down so much that the water steamed and began spitting and the ball and ring shrunk and could go through the ring again.

Our proposition was true, because the ball and the ring heated up and expanded!
